THE CACHE LAYERS
ELEVEN PARTITIONS. FIVE PER BREACH.
The Abyss is a machine that kept running. Each partition is one of its subsystems, failing in its own way,
and the Breach is a descent through them: the cache, then the bus and the archive, then cold storage, then the void
where the machine dreams of itself. A Breach traverses five. The fork at every tier decides which five.
The Sentinel has indexed eleven. It is in every one of them; it is the only thing that repeats.
INDEXED :: 11
TRAVERSED PER BREACH :: 5
CROSSINGS :: 4 + THE FINALE
REPEATED ELEMENT :: THE EYE
TIER 1
THE CACHE LINE
The edge of the machine. Processes being sorted, routed, shunted. Bright. Procedural. Legible.
TIER 2
THE BUS + THE ARCHIVE
Data in transit and data at rest, both decaying. Slower. Heavier. Ornamental.
TIER 3
COLD STORAGE
The deep store, frozen mid-write. Vast. Still. Infrared against ice.
TIER 4
THE VOID
The machine's dream of itself. Everything you have seen, wrong.
TIER 1
THE CACHE LINE
ENTRY + A FORK OF THREE · THE FIRST GATE FOLLOWS
Every Breach begins on the shelf. Then the fork deals one of three cards. The yard is one notch harsher than the garden; the sorter is the baseline. All three exit through the first gate.
SURVEY :: CONTOURS · ARRAYS · THE ROAD
THE SURVEY SHELFentry
the map the Sentinel drew.
Contour terraces, survey craters, antenna arrays, and the first road. This is the only partition that keeps the archipelago; it is the reference the others are measured against. Every verb the machine knows is introduced here at its gentlest.
Midway, a wall of survey glyphs resolves into the subject's own numbers. At the threshold the shelf ends and the ground falls away, and the fork is drawn as two lit trenches.

GROWN :: REACTION–DIFFUSION ON THE COPPER
THE OVERGROWTHb_1a
the cache, colonised.
A circuit plate under something that grew. Traces, vias and pads as an etched ground; server spines wrapped in vine; spore towers the shape of the Sporecap at world scale. The ground is not drawn. It is grown, live, while you cross it. The portrait above is growing now.
At the threshold every trace on the plate lights at once, then dies. The cache is dead. The bus opens below.

A BLOOM
ROUTED :: RAILS · LAMPS · THE TURNTABLE
THE SWITCHYARDb_1b
the router.
Rail ballast under signal lamps. Points that visibly switch when a Shunter arrives; gantries whose lamps change state with the Signalman's moves; a turntable, the only circle in the yard, and it turns. The first partition with no archipelago, no causeway, no veins. Only the Eye.
At the threshold the yard tilts down a gradient and the rails run off the bottom of the screen into the bus.
Natives
THE SHUNTER — it shunts · THE SIGNALMAN — it flips the gates

THE INTERLOCKER — it routes

A SIGNAL LAMP
SORTED :: BITONIC · 16 WIRES · 10 STAGES
THE SORTb_1c
the sorter.
A sorting network replayed under you. Every batch of keys is a set of bands whose widths are their values; every rung that fires is an exchange of lanes; the output is a wedge. Its comparators are dying. A dead rung never swaps, and its mistake survives to the output. The inversion count above is real.
At the threshold every comparator's sense flips. The network sorts descending. Every wedge reverses.

TIER 2
THE BUS + THE ARCHIVE
A FORK OF THREE · THE ROUTE CHOOSES YOUR SECOND GATE
Data in transit and data at rest, both decaying. The crossing after this tier is different for each route. No path meets a body twice.
ENGRAVED, THEN PRINTED :: THE CLOTH · THE LAMP
THE PALLb_2a · displayed as THE OSSUARY
data at rest.
The archive's dead processes lie under one great cloth laid over the black. You never see a body: only the cloth over the forms beneath, the largest on daises, the seams where the widths were sewn. The forms are your own run's dead, by family. The black under the cloth is the grave.
Everything here arrives mirrored or replayed. At the threshold the cloth is gathered up toward the top of the frame and held. A commit is also what a machine does.

THE TICKER — it quotes · THE REPOSTER CHOIR

COMPUTED :: KEPLER · THE WELL · THE CARRIER
THE DEAD ORBITb_2b · displayed as THE SPOOLWAY
the bus, read as an orbit.
A dead sun with a gold corona. Five corrupted planets on a real orbital solve, their rows torn in time buckets, hashed blocks missing with the sky showing through. Derelict satellites for moons. The audio spectrum arrives as a tunnel of rings, coming at the ship. Everything here still loops; an orbit is a loop.
At the threshold the routes die, the spectrum flatlines, and an uncharted return crests the sky. Something pings back.

ENCODED :: 4×4 DCT · QUANTIZED · MOSHED
THE CODECb_2c
the transcoder.
A test picture that is never shown, only rebuilt from its blocks, and every pass loses a little more of it. The keyframes drop and the picture predicts from a reference that is gone: every block smears along the vector it remembers. The Eye is the one block the codec keeps lossless.
At the threshold the picture is re-encoded on itself until only a flat mosaic remains. Generation loss, held.

TIER 3
COLD STORAGE
A FORK OF TWO · THE ROUTE CHOOSES YOUR THIRD GATE
The deep store, frozen mid-write. Every body served at this depth wears its second revision. The walls march, rake, and never fully close.
LIT :: ICE PLATES · AURORA · THE SCAN
THE GLACIERb_3a
the deep store, seen into.
Ice: slow, vast, crystalline, lit by one circling lamp. Seracs, crevasses, an antenna field, and frozen data visible inside the ice, suspended rather than falling. An aurora holds the top third. An infrared survey scan sweeps the plate every pulse and reveals what it crosses.
At the threshold the ground splits along the lane you are standing in, and the warden rises out of it.

PRINTED :: THE TRACE · THE WATCHDOG · THE COLLAPSE
THE KERNEL PANICb_3b
the kernel, printing its own death.
No ground is drawn. A terminal: a boot log, a hex dump whose addresses count, call-trace frames, register rows, panic lines inverted red, the rows climbing as the kernel prints. Midway it prints the descent's own frames by name. A watchdog counts down.
At the threshold the count reaches zero and the screen collapses to a held dot. The warden fights on a dead screen.

TIER 4
THE VOID
A FORK OF TWO · BOTH ROUTE TO THE CROWN
The machine's dream of itself. Everything you have seen, wrong. This is the one place where repetition is the point, and it is composed, not hashed.
FOLDED :: EVERY PLACE, WRONG · THE PLUNGE
THE ULTRAVIOLET REEFfinal
no ground. depth.
The reef grows on nothing. Its coral is built from every prior partition's shape, wrong: a server spine grown into a rail into an arch into a reel into a serac, folded, slowly rotating. Tears in the frame show the earlier grounds for an instant, the way a memory does.
At the threshold the reef collapses and a ring rises. The Crown.

THE BACKPLANEb_4b
the bus of buses.
A board's ground plane: the copper pour under the mask, the bus lines in their channels, and on the lines the voltage itself, every one carrying a live bit stream that reflects at its terminations, rings after every edge, and couples into its neighbours. Slots with gold fingers. Resistor packs with their colour bands. A clock rail. Old parts with their names on them.
Midway, the five places you came through plug in as cards. At the threshold the clock stops, every pulse freezes where it is, and the ringing stops decaying. The bus hangs.
